Every year, all county councillors get to nominate three roads in their division that they think are most in need of attention. The nominations are scored and the points added to those given by highways engineers for road condition etc - so councillor points give a road a 'leg-up' but aren't the main determinant, which is as it should be.
My three roads last year were (in alphabetical order): Sandrock Hill Road, Tilford Road and Wrecclesham Hill. I'm really pleased that, when Surrey's list of roads to be done next year were announced last week, my three all appeared.
Sandrock Hill Road will get the full works: dug-up, the existing surface scraped down and a complete resurfacing. The other two will be surface-dressed which means nothing will be taken away but a layer of tarmac added - quick and inexpensive.
Of course, we'd all like more roads to be treated but that's how the system works - the worst get done and the others move up in the queue. Haven't thought about the three for next year but will turn to that after Christmas - and would welcome suggestions.
